Do you comment on your own blog?

by Coturnix

Comment threads on blogs are an important aspect of the blogging culture. But I disagree that it is a defining aspect - there are many excellent blogs out there with no commenting allowed. Such blogs usually have a prominently displayed contact information for direct e-mailing to the author. One can always link to and trackback on one's own blog in response: blog-to-blog conservation is just as important to the blogosphere as a whole, if not more, than comments on any individual post. Other blogs have their feeds exported to LiveJournal or FriendFeed where one can post comments as well.

See how Dorothea Salo explains (not for the first time) why her blog has no commenting function. John Hawks explains it at the end of this post.

Then, there are hybrids - for instance some posts have comments and some don't on Leiter Reports. Or, you cannot comment on Talking Points Memo, but you can on other parts of the site, e.g., on TPMMuckraker, TPMDC and TPMCafe.

But if you allow comments on your blog, how do you, yourself, behave in your own comment threads?

This post tries to make a classification of commenting tactics of blog owners. I think I mix them up, using one or another as I see fit, depending on the context, etc.

What do you do on your blog? What type of host's behavior you prefer to see on a blog's comment thread? Do bloggers who never respond irk you to no end?

Light Cube for beginners

Creating a basic cube with 3D layers and then adding some background flares, and using some blurring and echo effects to improve lighting lead to this light cube.

Opening After Effects Projects in an Earlier Version

So you want to open a project saved in After Effects CS3 in an earlier version like After Effects 7.0? Wish there was a way to avoid redoing your entire project just because a client hasn't upgraded yet? Wish that Adobe would let you do a Save to XML just like in Final Cut Pro?

Sorry about the rant, but currently your only hope of opening a project saved in a newer version of After Effects is a manual process that involves a lot of copying and pasting.
Firstly, you'll need both versions installed on the same computer. This usually doesn't cause any problems, I always have at least 2-3 versions of After Effects installed at the same time.
Next step is to manually recreate your project in the earlier version. This involves importing all the sources, creating all the comps and changing all the settings to match the original project. It's a pain, I know...
Open the original project in the newer version and highlight the top layer in your composition and hit UU on the keyboard to reveal all properties that has have non-default values. Great shortcut, huh? Here's a bonus tip: just hitting U will show just the properties with keyframes!
Select all keyframes on the layer by click-dragging the mouse over the names of the properties.
Copy and paste into a text editor (not a word processor, instead use something like Notepad++ for Windows or Smultron for OS X) and changing the first line that says:
Adobe After Effects 8.0 Keyframe Data
... into ...
Adobe After Effects 7.0 Keyframe Data
If you are converting the animation into even older versions of After Effects, you'll have to change the number to match the version you are using (only use the whole increments such as 6.0 even if you are using version 6.5.)
Select all text in the text editor, copy and then paste onto the corresponding layer in the older version of After Effects.
Not exactly great, but just a tad bit better than redoing every keyframe. I haven't tested this on earlier versions than 6.5, but if you really need to down-convert to a five year old software, you're in trouble anyway... :)

Free Explosions – Fire – Missile – Decapitation Footage

We realize there are many amateur filmmakers whose budgetary or safety considerations prevent them from actually blowing stuff up. For them we will be offering our own stock footage, which can easily be dropped into shots using the "Screen" or "Luminescence" transparency tools in Premiere or Final Cut.
These files are full 720x480 DV NTSC mov files, at 29.97 fps.

We generally use the Speed tools in the editing software to slow explosions down to 50, 33, or even 20 percent of norm in order to give scale. To save bandwidth, we are posting them real-time. You can slow them down yourself as you desire.

Black smoke stock slowed and laid against a JPG background plate using the "Greenscreen" and "Motion" tools. SFX always help give such scenes a kick.
